At Out There, wine and music are intertwined forms of cultural expression. We value bottles and records that are deeply rooted with their producers and evoke a sense of time, place, and pleasure…and we take great joy in sharing them with you!
Each quarter, we share wines that we are especially excited about and an album that echoes their mood — a sensory pairing that you can enjoy together or explore individually.
For our inaugural Wine & Record Club, we’re embracing the beauty of improvisation — the collaborative explorations, spontaneous decisions, and intuitive adaptations that keep us curious.
So let's take a trip to California, the creative birthplace of both the vibrant, expressive wines of Rajat Parr and the music of the genre-defying quintet SML.
Rajat Parr has lived his life intertwined with the vine. The knowledge and inspiration gleaned from his legendary career as a top sommelier, award-winning author and celebrated winemaker has led him to the challenge of a lifetime as a wine farmer on the California Coast. Widely recognized as one of the country’s greatest sommeliers, he built his reputation as a wine director with an extraordinary palate, a rare gift for blind tasting, and an obsessive drive to explore new wines, winemakers, and regions.
In the second act of his career, Rajat turned his attention from the cellar to the vineyard with Parr Collective, becoming a driving force behind a new generation of California wine. Parr Collective is a community of shared knowledge and experience centered on the wines of Phelan Farm, Stolo, Brij Wines, and Scythian Wine Co. Rajat conceived of Parr Collective as a home for the exchange of ideas and inspiration he found on the road as a sommelier. Under the banner of Parr Collective, Rajat’s vinous ventures explore California’s potential to produce distinctive wines that speak of their unique origin with concentration and elegance.
AUTUMN 2025 WINES
Brij Wines 'Freund Grüner Veltliner' 24 - full-bodied with very light skin-contact and notes of green apple, stone fruit, white pepper, and a lovely saline finish.
Brij Wines ‘Grenache Rosé' 24 - truly like no other rosé we've ever tasted! light in body, yet dynamic with every sip giving subtle notes of raspberries, citrus, vanilla, coastal salinity, and even pineapple (?!), all of which are completely harmonious and never overpowering.
Brij Wines ‘Oso Rogue’ 23 - a mourvedre and grenache blend that is savory and structured, with notes of plum, black cherry, and wild herbs, a vein of minerality anchors the wine with a finish that echoes.
Scythian Wine Co. 'Revolution Red' 23 - a ripe and juicy medium-bodied blend of zinfadel, palomino & grenache blend from dry-farmed vineyards with cherry and cranberry juice flavors, floral notes, and hints of spice.
AUTUMN 2025 RECORD
SML is the quintet of bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann. Their second album, How You Been, finds the supergroup of prolific composer/producers pushing ever further into the hyperrealist, collectivist approach to music creation nascently explored on their debut Small Medium Large, which was lauded as “exuberant” by the Los Angeles Times, and “an exciting milestone” by Pitchfork.
How You Been represents a breakthrough in the musical language of the group. This new work was crafted via extensive post-production of recordings from a handful of shows in a similar fashion to their debut, but whereas Small Medium Large was constructed from analog tapes of the band’s very first (and very modest) shows at bygone Highland Park LA venue ETA, How You Been was built with a higher level of self-awareness and a far deeper pool of source material.
Here’s a great piece in the NYT about the making of this tremendous album and their ethos of embracing improvisation every step of the way.
