At Out There, wine and music are intertwined forms of cultural expression. We value bottles and records that are deeply rooted with their producers and evoke a sense of time, place, and pleasure…and we take great joy in sharing them with you!
This quarter features makers who work directly with source material that has deep cultural roots. Unified by a sense of curiosity and desire for learning, they move beyond replication or homage to something more akin to a collaboration with those who came before them.
A musician learning non-Western musical idioms through deep listening and transcribing, winemakers doing deep dives into terroir via distinct single vineyard cuvées of the same varietal, a grower reviving California’s oldest and most historic vineyards planted to less-common varietals, and an agronomist-turned-vigneron embedded in a truly stunning centuries-old site.
Each project is an exercise in site and cultural specificity with the utmost care for tradition as the foundation and creative exploration as an imperative.
SPRING 2026 WINES
A Tribute to Grace 'Rosé of Grenache, Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard' 24 - This is a multidimensional rosé: dry and crisp with notes of red currant, persimmon, anise, fresh herbs, and crushed stone while also having enough texture, as NYT’s Eric Asimov asserted, to be “a rosé that will stand up to a burger.”
Sandlands 'Cinsault' 22 - grown in a vineyard planted in 1886 (!!!) that are the oldest cinsault vines in North America — is pale, aromatic, and deceptively serious with notes of cranberry, pomegranate, dried herbs, and a long mineral finish. An absolutely perfect spring red.
Alexandre Déramé 'La Morandiére' Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine, Sur Lie 24 - The grapes for this cuvée are characterized by the ancient volcanic Gabbro soil in which they are planted, resulting in a bright, dry, and focused wine with notes of lemon zest, green apple, and wet stone, vibrant acidity, and a long, saline finish. Where are the oysters?!
Forteresse de Berrye 'Les Bourgères’ Saumur Blanc 23 - Built on a rocky outcrop, surrounded by dry moats and underground galleries, the medieval fortress of Berrye has stood amidst its vineyards since the 12th century. Fresh, textured, and energetic with notes of white peach, citrus, white flowers, and clean forest-floor dampness, reflecting a clarity and subtle depth that always leaves us wanting more.
SPRING 2026 RECORD
Marisa Anderson - ‘The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music, Vol. 1’
Portland, Oregon-based musician and composer Marisa Anderson — one of the most enigmatic, compelling artists working in the field of solo guitar — has long felt the influence of the traditional folk songs. When given a rare opportunity to digitize music from Harry Smith’s final record collection, Marisa downloaded 900 songs from around the world in 9 days - a total of 45 hours of continuous music which she dubbed ‘The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music.’
Her new album features interpretations of nine songs from the collection - a contemplative, beautiful, and immersive exploration of musical traditions from places that have been US conflict zones since 1970, the year Marisa was born. A journey, for sure. One that is distinctly Marisa Anderson.
